Restore Your Glowing Skin with Microdermabrasion

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Remove the dead skin to reveal a new, more beautiful you!

Let’s face it; fresh-looking, flawless skin is something we all covet, but that ever-growing collection of night creams, serums, anti-aging masks and brightening foundation crowding the bathroom counter can only do some much. Rather than spend time and money on products that just don’t cut it, we’ve fallen for another, much more effective option – microdermabrasion.

A celebrity skin-smoothing secret for years (A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Campbell and Michelle Williams are known to be fans), the secret is out and it’s not just the stars getting a mega-beauty boost from this complexion perfecting procedure.

Microdermabrasion: The 411

Quick, easy and cost-effective, microdermabrasion is consistently in the top five most popular nonsurgical procedures – with good reason. “Microdermabrasion is a great way to exfoliate skin and remove the dead surface skin cells,” explains Dr. Brian Zelickson, Director of the Zel Skin and Laser Center in Minneapolis. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, almost 500,000 procedures were done in 2011 alone.

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, the procedure is quick – and it works. Cleansing and moisturizing daily might be skin care musts, but they don’t ensure a revitalized complexion quite like a few sessions of microdermabrasion. The painless procedure involves exfoliating the surface layer of the skin with a simple abrasive paddle, cream or crystals. “Microdermabrasion removes the superficial portion of the skin,” explains Dr. Zelickson. Removing the dead cells (which can clog pores and leave skin dull and lackluster), allows the younger, smoother skin beneath to be revealed.

Microdermabrasion: Minimal Time, Big Benefits

A typical microdermabrasion session takes between 15 and 30 minutes, making it a perfect midday treatment. In under an hour you can take a big step toward clearer, smoother skin. Whether you’re fighting fine lines, dealing with age spots, or want an effective way to minimize discoloration or other superficial skin blemishes, this multitasking, skin-saving treatment has you covered. Microdermabrasion can also be helpful with oily and enlarged pores, blackheads, acne and even some acne scarring.

What Others Say

In addition to its already long list of benefits, microdermabrasion also stimulates the creation of collagen and cell turnover, something countless anti-aging creams promise, but never seem to deliver (despite their hefty price tags). Immediately following a microdermabrasion session, skin feels smoother and tighter.

Microdermabrasion: Need to Know

Microdermabrasion is a safe, common, non-surgical procedure; however there are people who should opt out. Talk to your physician before booking an appointment. Other than that, microdermabrasion is effective on all skin types and colors, offers a great alternative to chemical peels for anyone with sensitive skin and gives us that red carpet-worthy glow we all crave – but can’t ever really achieve at home. We especially love that microdermabrasion means less makeup (see you later, foundation), and more naturally gorgeous skin.

Do note though, that there may be some redness following a session. Skin will also be more sensitive to sun exposure post-treatment so don’t skip the sunscreen following microdermabrasion (or ever, for that matter). Moisturizing the skin is also a good idea since the procedure can dry the skin temporarily.

We’re not all born with flawless skin, but after a few microdermabrasion sessions, you’ll be more than ready for your close-up – or that stroll down the red carpet.
