Looking Great in Your 40s
Now is the perfect time to get serious about your skin care regimen so you can look as good as you feel.
Your Skin Now
Fluctuating hormones could be causing your skin to really misbehave. One day you might be having awful breakouts (yes, acne, in your 40s!), and the next you could be all dry and flaky. The fine lines that started to pop up a few years ago are getting deeper and your skin is becoming noticeably thinner and less even in texture and tone. You may also notice sagging, especially around the jaw line—this is due to loss of elasticity.
Damage Control
As your skin matures it is becoming more fragile, particularly when it comes to sun damage. “Skin aging increases with sun exposure,” warns Dr. Eric Bernstein, Clinical Associate Professor at University of Pennsylvania. For this reason, you’ll want to incorporate an SPF into your daily regimen if you haven’t already. Look for a daily moisturizer that contains SPF 15 or higher and use it consistently on your face and neck; use sunblock on the rest of your body when you know you’ll be spending a considerable amount of time in the sun.
Going Beyond the Basics
Cleanse, tone, moisturize; cleanse, tone, moisturize… You’ve performed this ritual so many times it’s become second nature for you. But even though you never go to sleep with makeup on, moisturize religiously, and drink your eight glasses of water a day, there’s still more you can do to look your best. Step up your beauty game with retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids that can help speed up cell turnover and brighten up your dull complexion. And while you’re at it, incorporate products that contain vitamins C and E or green tea into your regimen—the antioxidants are great for boosting sun protection and combating free radicals.
Blast Away the Past
Even with the impressive results rendered from the retinoids and antioxidants you’re using at home, there isn’t an at-home treatment invented that will give you the same results as microdermabrasion, a treatment that gently blasts away the thick, rough top layer of your skin to reveal the healthy, younger-looking layer underneath. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons confirms that you will see less wrinkles, smaller pores, fewer age spots and acne scars, and firmer, more even-toned skin with microdermabrasion. But don’t think you’ve wasted your money on the retinoids and AHAs; combined with microdermabrasion treatments, these topical medicines will work even better than if you used them alone. Bernstein confirms, “Microdermabrasion is a great way to augment the effect of topical treatments. I recommend it a lot.”

Still, you may be looking for additional options to help combat the signs of aging. Bernstein offers several solutions. Along with microdermabrasion and topical medicines, Bernstein thinks fillers, lasers, and Botox are great ways to achieve younger-looking skin. “Fillers like Juvederm and Restylane can fill those little smile lines and marionette lines at the bottom of the chin,” he says. “For facial expression lines—the ‘dreaded 11s’ between the eyebrows, squint lines, and vertical forehead lines—those lines respond beautifully and fabulously to botulinum toxin, or Botox.” Beautiful and fabulous…now, isn’t that exactly what you want?
