10 Myths Debunked

Microdermabrasion: Fact vs. fiction

The Truth about Microdermabrasion

Does it hurt? Is it worth it? Find the answers here.

If you’re interested in smooth, bright, glowing skin (and let’s face it; who isn’t?) microdermabrasion is one of the most effective ways to get the complexion you covet. But despite being a proven method for skin success, there remain a surprising number of myths surrounding the popular treatment.

If you’re considering microdermabrasion but haven’t been able to figure out what’s true — and what isn’t, we have the facts.

Myth #1: Microdermabrasion is painful

Despite what you might think microdermabrasion doesn’t hurt. In fact; most patients even find it to be a pleasant experience. Not sure what to expect? In a nutshell, the microdermabrasion hand piece gets passed over your skin and you’ll start to feel a mild scratching as the procedure removes the superficial skin cells. This feeling (which doesn’t hurt), is quickly replaced by a vibrating sensation, akin to a massage.

Myth #2: Each session takes a long time

The typical session for microdermabrasion takes only between 15 and 30 minutes, which means it’s the perfect treatment to fit into your busy schedule, whether you’re in between meetings, on your lunch break or you have some time before picking your kids up from school.

Myth #3: It’s not safe

If you’re worried about the safety of microdermabrasion, don’t be. It’s a common, non-surgical procedure with minimal risk involved. When performed by an experienced aesthetician or dermatologist, microdermabrasion can significantly enhance the complexion without affecting the deeper layers of the skin, meaning no pain — only gorgeous skin.

Myth #4: It doesn’t really do anything useful

Exfoliation is one of the most important skin care steps and you can think of microdermabrasion as the speediest path to a smoother complexion. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and debris (which clog pores and leave skin lacklustre) and improving the texture of the skin. This is precisely what microdermabrasion is designed to do. By taking off these dead cells the skin is exfoliated, revealing a smoother, more youthful appearance. Yes, please.

Myth #5: It requires a lot of downtime

They don’t call microdermabrasion a “lunch time treatment” for nothing. You should be able to go back to what you were doing (i.e. work) right after leaving your treatment. Your skin may look pink, but hey, you can pass that off as a healthy “glow” and you’ll be back to normal in 24 hours or less.

Myth #6: Those with darker skin can’t get microdermabrasion

Think you can’t book an appointment because you don’t have fair skin? Think again. Microdermabrasion is effective on all skin types and colors. Talk to you dermatologist about whether or not the treatment is right for you.

Myth #7: It’s no more effective than a scrub

While store shelves are full of tubes and jars containing exfoliating scrubs, they don’t hold a candle to the real deal. Unlike what you pick up at your local drug store or cosmetics counter, microdermabrasion is effective at improving and reducing fine lines, age spots or brown spots, and other superficial skin blemishes. The treatment can also be helpful with oily and enlarged pores, blackheads, and some acne scarring. In addition (talk about multitasking), microdermabrasion also stimulates the creation of collagen and cell turnover.

Myth #8: It takes a while to see results

Forget multiple treatments and weeks (or months) of waiting time. Immediately following a microdermabrasion session your skin will feel smoother and look brighter and more even toned.

Myth #9: At-home kits are quicker and easier

Like scrubs and exfoliating products, at-home microdermabrasion kits are a common site on store shelves. Although they may be helpful in some cases, trust us when we say there is no substitute for the real thing. A skin care physician will know what’s best for you and your skin type and the results will speak for themselves (i.e. you’ll look fabulous).

Myth #10: Anyone can do microdermabrasion

Like any cosmetic procedure, it’s best to see a medical professional or licenced practitioner. Anyone interested in improving their skin should consult with an experienced and knowledgeable expert. Microdermabrasion is safe and common, but you’re still better off booking an appointment with someone who knows what they’re doing.

Smooth, even toned, youthful skin is at your fingertips and only a treatment or two away. Microdermabrasion is the ideal options for anyone who wants to give their complexion a noticeable boost — quickly, comfortably and effectively.
