Microdermabrasion - Minimal Impact

  • Microdermabrasion has a very minimal impact on stretch marks. It helps improve the penetration of AHA's and Retin-A products, but has almost no impact on stretch marks.

    Dermabrasion May Make Them Worse

Dermabrasion, which is a much more aggressive procedure, is not appropriate for stretch marks. I never use it for my patients and I do not recommend it. Generally destructive treatments are not effective away from the face, in my opinion. Applying them to stretch marks is probably just going to make them worse, in my opinion.

    What Causes Stretch Marks?

Most people assume stretch marks are caused by the skin 'stretching' and tearing, an association helped by their name. The truth is that stretch marks are not caused by the skin tearing or stretching. Stretch marks are caused by hormonal changes in our skin, often associated with times of great weight gain. Such common times include pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, puberty and weight lifting. Each of these events is often accompanied by a shift in our body's hormones. These hormones caused changes in our body's elastic fibers, which is evident in our skin, causing the stretch marks.

    Alternative Treatments

Consult with an experienced physician to learn more about alternate treatments that can be more effective at removing stretch marks.
