Reverse the Signs of Aging

Looking Great in Your 50s

It’s never too late to start taking better care of your skin. With so many different options available today, you could start reversing the signs of aging in a matter of weeks.

Your Skin Now

In addition to a significant loss of elasticity, every year your skin loses sebum, the natural oil that helps keep it smooth and supple. Hyperpigmentation (also called “age spots”) is becoming more noticeable and you may even see nasty spider veins. Expression lines are more pronounced—those smile lines are still hanging out on your face long after your smile has faded. And if it hasn’t already, sun damage from all the sunbathing you did in your youth is becoming more evident as well.

Lay It On Thick

Now is not the time to skimp on sun protection; it is still possible to prevent further sun damage, as well as stop the progression of existing damage. “Skin aging increases with sun exposure,” Dr. Eric Bernstein, Clinical Associate Professor at University of Pennsylvania warns. To help combat the aging effects of harmful UVA and UVB rays, include an SPF in your daily beauty regimen. Look for a rich facial moisturizer that contains sunscreen and use it daily on your face and neck, and don’t forget to use sunblock on your arms and legs whenever they’re exposed.

Time for Upgrades

You know the basics, you’ve been doing them for years—cleanse, tone, moisturize—but buyer beware, not all products are created equal; what worked for your skin in your 20s and 30s will do little for your skin’s needs now. Upgrade your beauty arsenal to include super moisturizing, emollient-rich products that quench your thirsty skin. And if you haven’t already, it’s time to incorporate retinoids (there are emollient-based formulas available) and alpha hydroxy acids into your regimen; they can help combat the signs of aging, including some sun damage. It’s also time to look into products that contain antioxidants (think green tea or vitamins C and E); these will help boost sun protection and fight off free radicals.

In With the New

Even if you’ve taken exceptional care of your skin all these years, there’s still young, new skin waiting to be revealed. The fastest way to freshen up and unveil that younger skin is microdermabrasion. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that microdermabrasion treatment can help minimize the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, and even age spots. It also stimulates skin cell and collagen production, meaning you’ll have smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin in no time. And if you’re using retinoids or AHAs to treat your maturing skin, microdermabrasion can increase their potency. “It’s a great way to augment the effect of topical treatments,” says Dr. Bernstein. In other words, you’ll see the results you want much faster.

Besides microdermabrasion, Bernstein recommends more aggressive treatments, like lasers and fillers, to improve your skin and reverse the signs of aging. “Combine fillers with Botox, and fillers with toxins and lasers to treat facial redness and pigmentation, or for rejuvenation,” he suggests. “Fillers like Juvederm and Restylane fill the little smile lines while facial expression lines, the ‘dreaded 11s’ between the eyebrows, squint lines, as well as vertical forehead lines—these lines respond beautifully and fabulously to botulinum toxin, or Botox.” Fabulous at 50 doesn’t sound too bad, right?
